His first English-language publication, however, was The Quatrains of Abu'l-Ala (1903), a translation of selected poems by tenth-century Arab poet Abu al-'Ala' al-Ma'arri (with another volume, The Luzumiyat of Abu'l-Ala, following in 1918), who is known in the Arabic literary tradition as a great skeptic and rationalist poet-philosopher. He introduced prose poetry for the first time into the Arabic language and spearheaded an important literary movement known as mahjar (immigrant) poetry, which introduced European Romantic themes into Arabic.

Produced by The Johns Hopkins University Press in collaboration with The Milton S. Fadda-Conreys meticulous study surveys a rich catalog of Arab American literary and cultural production from the 1990s to the present, including poetry, fiction, nonfiction, memoir, drama, film, and visual art. His Nabdha fi al-thawrah al-firinsiyyah (Treatise on the French Revolution) appeared in 1902, and numerous articles, speeches, short stories, and poems established his literary reputation in the Arab world by the turn of the century. Rather than a split vision embraced by earlier critics, Fadda-Conrey advocates a less fractured formulation of identity that enacts a transnational vision where simultaneous belonging is at the heart of transnational reconfigurations of citizenship (29). Tracing the shifts in transnational perspectives, from the founders of Arab-American literature, like Gibran Kahlil Gibran and Ameen Rihani, to modern writers such as Naomi Shihab Nye, Joseph Geha, Randa Jarrar, and Suheir Hammad, Fadda-Conrey finds that contemporary Arab-American writers depict strong yet complex attachments to the US landscape. Carol Fadda-Conreys scholarship has been at the forefront of this movement, and her debut monograph, Contemporary Arab-American Literature, is a timely, compelling contribution that broadens the critical terrain by emphasizing the dynamic nature of homes and homelands in the United States and the Arab world. Hassan (bio) Although the history of Arab immigration to the US is well documented, the genesis of Arab-American literature remains to be adequately charted.1 A few general overviews, studies of individual authors, and collections of essays provide useful entry points into the subject, but a systematic account of the birth and development of a tradition that is now in its second century remains to be undertaken.2 Such a project obviously cannot be fulfilled here, but the aim of this article is to highlight the historical and discursive conditions that shaped the intellectual, political, and literary projects of the first Arab-American writer, Ameen Rihani (18761940), and his contemporaries, and how those projects converged in his major novel, The Book of Khalid (1911). Fadda-Conrey writes with passion and analytical precision about a topic in which she is obviously well versed and deeply involved."Jordan Times"Fadda-Conrey's work is sure to make a lasting impact on the way we think about not only Arab American artistic and cultural production but also the relationship between ethnic identity, American citizenship, and transnational belonging."MELUS[Fadda-Conreys] preference for the term transnational enactments allows for such variances as physical mobility and imaginative attachment and favors larger structures of belonging.American Literary Scholarship. Each chapter makes the case that the US landscape is transformed by their presence in both imaginative and concrete ways (9). Although Rihani shared those twin objectives with many of his contemporaries, his approach was shaped by his location in the US.
